2017 looks like a good year for movies and tv shows. There are many movies that have already come out as well as movies on the horizon that look like they could be blockbusters. There have been great reviews about movies like Logan, Kong: Skull Island, Fate of the Furious and Beauty and The Beast. All of these movies have gotten a great score on Rotten tomatoes and are overall impressive movies. I have to warn you if you havn’t seen Logan or Kong there is a spoiler alert.
Logan is an amazing movie, it appealed to many different moviegoers. It is an R rated movie with lots of swearing, there is also lot of fight scenes that involve decapitation, stabbing, alcohol and drugs throughout and there is some partial nudity in the beginning of the film. It follows Wolverine (Logan) and Professor X as they try to protect Logan’s daughter (X-23) from the Essex Corps, which is a corporation that attempts to create new mutants. The story starts off with Logan hiding Professor X from The Essex corps in an abandoned water storage tank. The Professor is one of the most powerful mutants in the world with vast psionic powers (which includes telepathy and telekinesis). With his age he gets seizures that cause large tremors and a loud noise that puts everyone in a state of shock. Logan is forced to give Professor drugs to control these seizures. This is recurring factor throughout the movie. The group runs into problems as they travel across the country in search for eden (a safe land for mutants), which turns out to be unsafe as well. The group is then forced to travel to Canada where they are definitely safe. There is plenty of graphic and intense battle scenes throughout the movie, sadly in the end it shows that Logan is killed in the final scene as his healing factor has been struggling throughout the movie. Eventually his body can’t take it anymore because when he is thrown onto a large spike he passes on. It is a very emotional ending to a very action packed film. Overall Logan is a movie that has great qualities, and is definitely recommended for movie lovers. Kong: Skull Island has a very star studded cast in Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman and John C. Reilly, which helps it land a 77% on rotten tomatoes. The movie is set in the Cold War when a scientist (John Goodman) discovers an unexplored island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and is off the coast of Indonesia. It follows an ensemble of scientists and air force as they travel through the ungodly island. There are many deaths throughout the movie including John Goodman’s character as well as Samuel L. Jackson (Sams is more towards the end). Early in the movie the faction discovers the “different” wildlife, as the creatures are massive compared to the humans and what the humans are use to. Sam Jackson’s character is portrayed as the villain, but it is a slowly developing character as you see him grow madder and madder with revenge as he wants Kong dead for destroying his fleet. As the movie continues you see the survival story of the characters as they try to figure a way back to civilization. When all hope is lost you see the character of John C. Reilly a man who has been trapped on the island since WWII, as he crashed his plane so many years earlier. He takes the remaining members to a village of locals who have lived on the island for decades. The now larger group is able to build a boat from Reilly’s plane and travel down the river. Marlow (John C. Reilly) states that Kong is the guardian of the island as he protects the villagers from Skullcrawlers which kill a large amount of the cast including John Goodman. There is very climactic parts as Samuel L. Jackson is about to kill Kong the other group members attempt to stop him. There is also an intense battle scene between Kong and the largest Skullcrawler, which results in Kong defeating the large reptile and allowing the remaining members of the ensemble. The movie Kong:Skull Island was a great success generating $555 million dollars from the box office and is an overall great movie for a family to see. 2017 is a great year for movies for the whole family from Spiderman: Homecoming to Cars 3. As a movie lover I am very excited to watch as many movies as possible in the coming year.

Buchenwald was one of the oldest and largest concentration camps in Nazi Germany. Despite experiencing the horrors of WWII Lewkowicz was able to survive and immigrated to Montreal in 1952, where he learned to make bagels from Hyman Seligman, who was one of the first people to bring bagels to Montreal. These events started the great bagel tradition of Montreal.
Does the convenience of WIFI outweigh the harmful effects? WIFI has many intriguing features, it is very accessible, it provides access to information from all over the world, and it allows us to meet and keep in touch with people. However it is also strongly suspected of having harmful effects, leading to cancer and other diseases. Wireless internet access through radio waves (WIFI) has brought many changes to our lives. Many of the changes create convenient access to information. However, constant exposure in school has the potential of creating health issues. Having access to internet has many benefits. Information at your fingertips, makes it easier to find resources and factual information. There are not as many books required for learning, and less paper is used. It is also low cost compared to the cost of replacing books and paper. You also have the potential to connect with people all over the world, which opens many doors to a more diverse learning experience. Nevertheless, there are also drawbacks to WIFI access that should be considered. I feel the amount of WIFI used in school is unnecessary. Previous generations did not have computers in school, they had typewriters and they wrote with a pencil. They did not have wifi in every room of their school. An illness has emerged making some people sick, called electromagnetic hypersensitivity. The concerns around this illness are increasing because there is so much exposure to WIFI, which gives off electromagnetic radiation and low-gigahertz frequency. This can create health problems like lack of concentration, headaches, memory lapses, altered heart rate and ear ringing just to name a few. Research is even showing an increase in cancer rates. Many European countries and some Canadian cities are reluctant to put WIFI in schools, in fact they have started to remove WIFI from the schools that already have it. The World Health Organization sent out an alarm in 2011 saying WIFI adds radio frequency to the atmosphere at a level that is the same risk category as lead and DDT (http://www.emfwise.com/government-health-advice.php). The effect of WIFI on the younger generation is different than the effect on the older generation. The older generation did not have any of this as they were growing up, WIFI became prevalent once their brains were already developed. While kids my age and younger have always had it and will continue to have it for probably the rest of their lives. This drastically increases their exposure to the electromagnetic radio waves at a very vulnerable age, when their brains are not fully developed and their skulls are not as thick. This magnifies the problem. |
